It's winter, the furnace or fireplace is on and all the moisture has been sucked from the air in your home. You're waking up with a dry throat and your nose feels cracked and dry inside. You notice your dry skin constantly feels itchy. It almost feels like your skin is two sizes too small for you body! Sound familiar? For those of us living in countries that experience cold winters, this is simply a part of life. Here's the good news, you don't have to put up with it! Here's a list of things you can do to remedy dry air & skin.
HUMIDIFY THE AIR - You're going to have a better chance of relieving your dry eyes, nose, throat & skin if you're putting moisture back into the air.
Keep a humidifier running in your bedroom and in your main living area to increase moisture levels.
If you use a wood-burning stove to heat your home, place a pottery bowl filled with water and a few drops of your favourite essential oils on top of the stove to replace moisture and enjoy the added benefits of aromatherapy.
EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN - By removing dead skin cells from the skin, your body cream will have a better chance of absorption, making it far more effective.
Dry brushing also referred to as body brushing before bathing is a great way to exfoliate dead skin cells and eliminate waste via lymph stimulation. I'll go into details on this in a future post.
Using a Sugar Polish is also a great way to exfoliate, but use it at the end for your shower! Polishing at the beginning of your shower just means you will rinse all the wonderful oils down the drain. Also be sure to rinse your hair BEFORE you sugar polish, or else you will be putting oil into your clean hair and you'll end up with a bad hair day!
MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN - I know this one is pretty obvious but...
Using a cream instead of a lotion in the winter months is key. If you've read my previous blog you will know there is a difference between cream & lotion. Cream is a more intense moisturizer, creating a better barrier to keep moisture in the skin.
Applying cream to the skin immediately after bathing also helps lock in the moisture your skin has absorbed.
YOUR CLEANSER MAKES A DIFFERENCE - The type of cleanser or soap your using can also make a big difference. If you're using a soap or body wash with harsh surfactants, you are essentially fighting a losing battle. Be gentle on your skin and choose a soap that is mild and moisturizing.
CONSISTENCY - Applying cream to your parched skin once a week isn't going to help you in the long run. Be kind to your skin and give it a daily drink.
Are you having trouble opening the pump for the newest product you bought? Well I have a quick fix for you. Normally you would put your finger on this part of the pimp and twist it open, but sometimes they can get really tough to open. Take the pump out of the bottle, rinse off the shaft and dry it. Then you're going to firmly grip the shaft just under the collar of the pump and firmly twist to the right. That will pop the pump open, put the pump back in the bottle and you're ready to use your new product. I hope that helps!
Hi there, it's Tova Tuesdays and I'm Tova the T in T•LANGHANS Artisanal Spa Products. I just took off my makeup using the Oil Cleanse Method and now I'm going to show you how I did it.
The theory behind the oil cleanse method is that like cleans like. I've got a full face of makeup on and I'm going to take it all off with virgin olive oil. I'm going to pour a quarter size of olive oil in the palm of my hand and I will anoint myself with the oil and get it on my face evenly.
When you've got just a little left in your palm, scoop it up, rub your fingers together and start massaging the oil into your face. Those with oily skin or have issues with black heads or white heads, might want to put some castor oil in the olive oil as well. Castor oil is more of an astringent and cleans even deeper than just straight olive oil. The trick is finding out what percentage of castor oil you want in the blend of oils. Massage the oil into your skin to soften up any hard dirt that might be packed into you pores. Then take a clean face cloth and run that under hot water. Wring out the face cloth, if it's too hot let it cool a touch then place it on your face for a nice steam. Gently wipe your face with the cloth, rinse and repeat with the other side of the face cloth. I like to let the face cloth dry overnight before I throw it in my face cloth hamper and I'll use a fresh face cloth the next day. Now use just 2 or 3 more drops of olive oil to moisturize your face and your're done! I like to do the oils cleanse method before bed because your skin does 80% of it's healing and rejuvenating while you sleep.
When I first came across this strange technique to clean your face I was very skeptical. I've been doing it for 5 years now and I'll never go back to using a commercial cleanser. It helps me control my rosacea and my 52 year old skin has never been happier!
I'd love to see the results you get from trying the oil cleanse method yourself. Tag me @tova_langhans on instagram!
